Meaning of the Word “Bible”

The word “Bible” is an English word. It comes from the Greek word “biblia” which means “books”.

Biblia is derived from the Greek word “biblos”. Biblos is a word that describes a plant called Papyrus Plant. Papyrus plant is used for making a type of paper in ancient times.

The word “Scripture” means “Bible” and saying “The Holy Bible” is the same as saying “The Holy Scriptures”.

The word “Scripture” “Holy Scriptures” and “Word of God” and some other phrases are used in the Bible to refer to the Holy Bible. But there is no where in the Holy Bible that the words “Bible” or “Holy Bible” are used. People choose to use these words as a title for God’s words.

When the word “Scriptures” is used with capital “S”, it means the sacred writings of God (Jehovah)

God uses the Holy Bible to tell us about Himself and to let us know who we are.

It is in the Holy Bible that God reveals to us the reason He created the earth and what He wants us to do on earth.

Christians use the Holy Bible to read and study about what God’s Word says.

The Holy Bible is also called Christian Holy Bible or The Holy Scriptures.

The Author of the Holy Bible:

The Author of the Bible is God.

God used about 40 different men to write down the content of the Bible. He used the Holy Spirit to move and direct the men to record what He wanted. The Bible itself says,

Above all else, however, remember that no one can explain by himself a prophecy in the Scriptures.

For no prophetic message ever came just from the will of man, but men were under the control of the Holy Spirit as they spoke the message that came from God.

(2 Peter 1:20, 21 – Good News Bible – GNB)

And in 2 Timothy 3:16, 17 it says,

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching the truth, rebuking error, correcting faults, and giving instruction for right living,

so that the person who serves God may be fully qualified and equipped to do every kind of good deed.

(Good News Bible – GNB).
