Other Divisions of Christian Bible

Division of the Bible into Books

The total number of books in the Christian Bible is 66.

The Old Testament has 39 books while the New Testament has 27 books.

The Old Testament starts from Genesis and ends in Malachi. The New Testament is from Matthew to Revelation.

These 66 books make up what is called the Christian Bible Canon.

Some other 11 books which are not part of the 66 books were rejected as part of the Holy Bible Canon.

These other books are called the Apocrypha. The Roman Catholics declared the 11 books to be part of the Bible Canon and refer to them as Deuterocanonical. This means that they are the second (or later) canon.

We shall, in this article, say more things about the 66 books.

Division of Christian Holy Bible into Chapters and Verses

There is a further division of the Christian Bible into chapters and verses.

The division of the Bible into chapters and verses was done by a man called Stephene Langton. He did it in AD 1228.

The division of the Holy Bible into chapters and verses was done in order to make it easy to find specific passages of the Bible.

If chapters and verses were not created, the Bible would have been one long paragraph.

Mr. R. Nathan divided Old Testament into verses in AD 1448. And Robert Stephenus divided the New Testament into verses in AD 1551.

The first complete English Bible that has our present chapters and verses first appeared in AD 1560. It is called the Geneva Bible and was produced by a group of scholars in Geneva.
